But still I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t easy

I am trying to break your heart

Wilco, I Am Trying to Break Your Heart

Some of the best things we read this weekend didn’t have much to do with products or economics. Actually, most of them were either heartbreaking, inspirational, or some combination of the two. These articles made us think, ponder how terrifying random chance can be, and maybe get a little weepy.

So, here are three great articles that might make you cry:

1. 40 Years After an Acid Attack, a Life Well Lived

The inspiring and frightening story of Berkeley resident Dr. Joshua Miele. Forty years ago, a horrific act of violence shattered his childhood, took his eyesight, and destroyed most of his facial features.  The article makes clear that humans are capable of astounding evil but also of adapting and thriving.

2. Photographer as Witness: A Portrait of Domestic Violence (warning*)

*These images are disturbing, so only click through if you’re ready for them.

Literally, this is a portrait of domestic violence. Photographer Sara Naomi Lewkowicz follows around a young, troubled couple and documents the harrowing scene when a domestic assault takes place. Domestic violence is all too common, but this is the rare occurrence when it’s documented in journalistic form.

3. We Found Our Son in the Subway

You probably read this last week, but how about reading it again and feeling good about the world? The story of how a man found a child abandoned in a New York subway station and how a young family came to be. Also a story of a judge that took bold, decisive action and did a world of good.

Okay, that’s all for now. Our regularly scheduled broadcast of callous economic logic will be resuming shortly. But for now, hugs all around.
